To connect Steam Deck to your Xbox through XBPlayer, enable the console’s remote features, sign in to your Microsoft account and select the Xbox in the app. Xbox Cloud Gaming does not require a home console: open the cloud section and choose a game available to your account. The Steam Deck edition of XBPlayer uses the built-in controller rather than a phone-style touch layout.

This guide covers the first session after XBPlayer is already installed on Steam Deck. Release and download information is on the official XBPlayer website. If you are still choosing a client, start with the XBPlayer, Greenlight and browser comparison.

Choose where the game runs

GoalModeWhat to prepare
Continue a game installed on your XboxRemote PlayAn Xbox One or Series X|S, remote features, the right to launch the game and the save you want. Leave the disc in the console if it is required.
Play without a home XboxXbox Cloud GamingA cloud service and specific game available in your country and to your account. Buying the client does not replace these requirements.

Owning an Xbox does not mean you have to use Remote Play. If the game you want is available in the cloud, you can compare both modes. The cloud catalog, queue and Microsoft’s service rules differ from connecting to your own console. How to choose between Remote Play and cloud gaming.

Prepare the Xbox for your first Remote Play session

  1. Turn on the console and check that the game launches under your profile. Finish updates before connecting from the Deck.
  2. Enable remote features in the Xbox settings and run the console’s built-in test. Follow the full sequence in the Xbox Remote Play setup guide.
  3. For the first session, leave the Xbox on and connect the Deck to the same home network. This lets you check access and controls separately from wake-up.
  4. If possible, connect the Xbox to the router by Ethernet. The Deck can stay on Wi-Fi. Wiring the console removes only its wireless link.

Use Sleep mode if you want to wake the console remotely, and account for its active hours. Testing sleep is not a required first step when the Xbox is already on. Once the home connection works, separately test access from an external network and wake-up.

Sign in to Microsoft and start a game

  1. Open XBPlayer on Steam Deck and start Microsoft sign-in. Follow the URL, code or other confirmation method shown by the app.
  2. On Microsoft’s sign-in screen, choose the account with the Xbox profile you need. After confirming, return to XBPlayer and wait for sign-in to finish. The code is for Microsoft’s page, not for sending to support.
  3. For Remote Play, select your console and start the stream. If several consoles are listed, check the name of the Xbox you want.
  4. For cloud gaming, open the cloud section, find an available game and start it. Your home Xbox does not need to be on.
  5. Open a familiar game menu and check confirm, cancel, both sticks and the triggers. Then play a relaxed section of the game.

If the Xbox is missing from the list, start by checking the profile and console availability. If a cloud game will not launch, check game access and the service’s message. Reinstalling the client does not grant a game license or fix an Xbox service outage.

How controls work on Steam Deck

The Steam Deck edition does not show touch game controls or their editor. Use the built-in sticks, buttons and triggers. B goes back within the app; what it does in a game depends on that game. In XBPlayer’s default profile, the View + Menu combination sends the Guide command: briefly press both buttons for the Xbox Guide, or hold them together for about half a second to open the XBPlayer panel.

View and Menu are the two small buttons on either side of the Deck’s screen. If you changed the profile, check that their combination is still assigned to Guide in XBPlayer. The Steam system button may open the SteamOS menu; that is a separate action, so start with View + Menu for the client panel.

Use the physical-controller settings to check mappings, sticks and triggers. Start with the built-in input viewer: a visible press confirms that the app processed the command, not that the Xbox received it. Use the input-viewer and controller-profile checks in that guide; its Android system-settings steps do not apply to SteamOS. If buttons are swapped, check manual mappings and the profile’s swap options. For a stick that moves on its own, use the dead-zone guide.

Avoid stacking remapping layers unnecessarily. Changes in the system’s controller profile, XBPlayer and the game can combine in unexpected ways. Record the original values and change one layer at a time.

Picture quality: stability first, then detail

XBPlayer has separate video settings for Remote Play and Cloud Gaming. Compare one mode, one scene and one setting per attempt. The stream-quality guide lists the resolution choices, bitrate limiter and rules for applying changes.

During Remote Play, changing resolution through the session panel offers a restart. Once you confirm, the app performs it automatically. If you changed the general video settings, start a new session manually. For changed cloud settings, start a new Cloud Gaming session. You do not need an additional restart after one has already completed.

Compare stationary text and a camera turn. If small UI elements are difficult to read, first check the game’s own interface and text scaling. If motion freezes, compare Wi-Fi and background downloads using the stutter guide.

Ending a session, sleeping the Deck and continuing elsewhere

Before putting Steam Deck to sleep or closing the app, save using the game’s own save system and wait for it to finish. Sleeping the receiving device does not tell the Xbox to save. You may need to reconnect next time, and returning to a running game does not prove that progress was written to a save.

When moving from your Xbox to the cloud, check that you use the same profile and a compatible game edition, and wait for the required synchronization. Do not delete saves as a troubleshooting experiment. See the guide to continuing games across devices.

The Deck edition’s terms differ from the mobile play-time balance. Do not assume that Android or iOS minute-based offers apply to it. Check access to games, cloud gaming and Microsoft’s online modes separately from buying the client. See what you pay for in XBPlayer and which Xbox access you need to play.

Your checklist

Your first connection on Steam Deck

Check off the results for your chosen mode. Items about your own console apply only to Remote Play.

The correct Xbox profile is selected

XBPlayer shows the account with the games and saves you need. Microsoft sign-in is fully complete.

How to sign in to XBPlayer and check your Xbox profile →

The game starts in the selected mode

For Remote Play, you connected to the correct Xbox. For Cloud Gaming, you launched a cloud game available to the account.

The main controls work

In a relaxed game section, you checked confirm, cancel, sticks and the triggers you need. Controller profiles do not produce unexpected overlapping mappings.

Android sees the controller, but Xbox Remote Play does not respond →

The session panel is accessible

With the default profile, holding View + Menu for about half a second opens the XBPlayer panel and you can return to the game. You can distinguish it from a short Xbox Guide command and the SteamOS system menu.

External access to your Xbox is tested

If you plan to use Remote Play away from home, you completed a separate session through an external network and tested wake-up separately if needed.
