How to prepare Xbox for Remote Play: remote features and Sleep
Enable remote features, select Sleep and test two connections: with your Xbox on, then after it goes to sleep. This checks remote wake-up separately.
On this page
To prepare an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S for Remote Play, enable remote features and choose the Sleep power mode. Then test two connections: first with the console on, and again after it goes to sleep. The second test shows whether XBPlayer can wake your Xbox when you leave the TV.
Start by launching the game on the Xbox itself
With Remote Play, your console runs the game and XBPlayer streams its picture to another device. You need an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, a connection to the Xbox network, and an installed game your profile can access. If you planned to play without your own console, first read how Remote Play differs from Xbox Cloud Gaming.
While the TV and controller are close by, do three things:
- Turn on the Xbox, sign in to your profile and install any system update the console requires. After it restarts, wait for the home screen.
- Open the game you want. Finish any mandatory update, check access to the game and confirm the save you need is available.
- If the game will not launch on the Xbox itself, address its error message first. Setting up streaming does not solve a license problem or an unfinished installation.
Launching on the TV checks that the game is ready. You will test whether it can be played remotely during the stream.
Enable remote features in console settings
The Xbox instructions give this sequence:
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system → Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features.
- Select “Enable remote features”. These are the English interface labels.
If a Remote Play test is available in this section, run it. Read the result and address the reported problem before trying to connect again. Internet access on the console does not replace permission to use remote features.
Choose Sleep and check active hours
Choose Sleep in power options. The full English menu path is Settings → General → Power options.
According to Xbox power help, Sleep is needed for remote wake-up. Shutdown (energy saving) supports remote features while the console is on, but once it shuts down you must turn the Xbox on using its power button or a controller. A successful session with the Xbox running therefore does not test wake-up.
If active hours are configured for Sleep, make sure they cover when you intend to play. Outside that interval, the console shuts down fully and remote wake-up is unavailable. This behavior is described in the official explanation of active hours. Check your own schedule rather than assuming the default settings.
Leave the Xbox and router connected to power and the network. A smart plug that cuts power to the console prevents remote startup. The TV does not have to stay on for streaming.
Prepare the home network for the first attempt
Where possible, connect the Xbox to the router by Ethernet. For Wi-Fi, choose a location with a stable signal. For the first test, connect the device running XBPlayer to the same home network and pause large downloads. This is a convenient testing sequence, not a requirement always to play on one network.
Use the router's main network: a guest network may isolate devices from one another. If the Xbox cannot access the internet, restore its ordinary connection first. There is no need to open ports at random for the first launch.
Test connection and reconnection from sleep
- With the Xbox switched on. Open XBPlayer on the device you will play on and sign in to the Microsoft account used to enable remote features on the console. Under “Your consoles”, select this Xbox and tap “Start Remote Play”. Check the picture, sound and your game's response to inputs. Detailed steps are in the first-session guide.
- After putting it to sleep. Save your game, end the stream and put the Xbox to sleep normally with Sleep selected. Wait for it to enter that state, then reconnect. Leave power connected for this test and do not choose a full shutdown.
If connection works only while the console is on, check Sleep, active hours and whether the network connection stays available during sleep. If neither attempt works, start with the account, remote features permission and error message. If the picture appears but one game will not launch, investigate the game separately from the Xbox connection.
Before traveling, run one more test: connect through another network while you are still at home and can change settings. Home tests prepare the console; the external test checks access over the internet.
For an Android phone, follow the Remote Play setup steps; for iPhone/iPad, use iOS setup; for Steam Deck, use Deck client setup. The Xbox console settings are the same in all these cases.
What to check after a connection attempt
Match the test result to the relevant situation. If the symptom changes, move to the corresponding check.
The Xbox is missing from the list
Check console power and network access, remote features permission and the selected Microsoft account. Try again with the Xbox switched on.
Xbox Remote Play cannot find your console: what to check →The Xbox appears, but streaming will not start
Record the exact message and try again with the console on and both devices on the home network. Continue Remote Play troubleshooting based on the symptom.
Xbox Remote Play not working: troubleshoot by symptom →It works only while the Xbox is already on
Check Sleep, active hours, and whether power and the network remain available in sleep. Test waking it at the time you expect to play.
Xbox will not turn on remotely: wake-up settings →The Xbox picture appears, but the game will not open
Read the game message and test a normal launch on the console: check installation, required updates and profile access. After fixing the problem, try Remote Play again.
An Xbox game you own asks you to buy it again: account, license and cloud →It works at home, but not through another network
Keep the settings that passed the home tests. Record the external network, Xbox state and exact error; work through the away-from-home connection checks.
Xbox Remote Play away from home: checks before a trip →If connection and wake-up work at home, test an external network separately before traveling, while you can still reach the console.
