Xbox will not turn on remotely: wake-up settings

Remote Xbox wake-up requires Sleep, remote features enabled and suitable active hours. Start by checking the connection while the console is already on.

If your Xbox will not turn on remotely, first turn it on manually and start Remote Play in XBPlayer. If it connects, check the wake-up requirements: remote features, Sleep mode and active hours. Xbox One and Series X|S must remain connected to power and the network. The app cannot turn on a console with no power.

First connect while your Xbox is already on

Run the first check beside the console. Turn on the Xbox, make sure it has internet access, then connect to it from XBPlayer. For comparison, it is useful to keep the device and console on the same home network. We recommend this for the first connection; after setup, you can test Remote Play from another network separately.

Distinguish two results: whether the powered-on Xbox appeared in the list and whether streaming began. The following reference will help you choose your next check.

What the test with the Xbox on showed

First check the connection to a console you have turned on manually. If you cannot currently access the Xbox, leave its actual state unverified.

The Xbox is on but missing from the list

Check the profile and remote features using the discovery guide. Sleep settings alone do not explain an empty list.

Note the exact error and check the connection to the console while it is already running. Wake-up has not yet been tested separately.

There is a picture after manual power-on, but not from Sleep

Check remote features, Sleep and active hours that include the time of your attempt. Save the game and end the session. Put the Xbox to sleep using the normal power command, then connect again; record console power-on and the appearance of a picture separately.

Wake-up succeeded. If a TV is nearby, check the Xbox interface on it; note the client error and move on to stream troubleshooting.

The console and router must remain connected to power and the network. A full shutdown or switching off the power supply does not replace a Sleep test. A successful home test does not yet confirm access from outside.

Enable remote features and Sleep on the console

  1. On your Xbox, press the Xbox button on the controller and open Profile & system → Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features.
  2. Select Enable remote features.
  3. Go to Profile & system → Settings → General → Power options and select Sleep.

These paths follow the Remote Play setup guide and the Xbox power guide. Translated Microsoft materials may use slightly different names for Power options.

Sleep is specifically required for remote wake-up. With Shutdown (energy saving) selected, remote features are available while the Xbox is on. After shutdown, however, you need to turn it on using the button on the console or controller. A successful session after manually turning it on therefore does not confirm that wake-up is configured correctly.

Check active hours: Sleep alone is not enough

In power settings, check the active hours schedule. It determines when an Xbox in Sleep mode is ready to wake remotely. Once the set interval ends, the console shuts down fully. Microsoft describes this behavior in its article about active hours.

For testing, set an interval that includes the current time. If you are preparing for a trip, include your intended playing time in the console’s time zone; convert the session time if you will travel to another time zone. Use the settings on your own console rather than assuming a default schedule.

Xbox stateWhat it means for testing
The Xbox is already onYou can test Remote Play, including with Shutdown selected.
Sleep, within active hoursWith remote features enabled, you can test remote wake-up.
Shut down in Shutdown mode or after active hours have endedIt needs to be turned on locally, followed by another check of the mode and schedule.
No power or home network connectionRestore power and connectivity first; app settings cannot replace them.

Repeat the sleep and wake cycle beside the console

  1. With the Xbox on, start Remote Play and wait for the interface or game to appear.
  2. If a game is running, save your progress. End the remote session.
  3. With Sleep selected and within active hours, turn off the console using the normal power command. Do not choose a full shutdown or switch off its power supply.
  4. Connect again from XBPlayer. Check two outcomes separately: whether the Xbox turned on and whether the remote picture appeared.

If it works, repeat the cycle without changing settings. If it fails, note the time of the attempt, the selected mode, the schedule and the app’s message.

Restore the starting conditions after a power cut

Check locally that power has returned and the router is online again. Turn on the Xbox manually, wait until it is ready, then repeat the test cycle. Also check any extension lead or smart plug: it must not cut power to the console or router during remote gaming.

If you have already left and power or the home network is unavailable, you will need someone there to help. Signing in to XBPlayer again will not restore those conditions.

If wake-up works at home, check access from elsewhere

While you can still reach your Xbox, turn off Wi-Fi on your phone and repeat the test over mobile data: first with the console on, then from Sleep during active hours. If neither works from outside, use the outside-network troubleshooting guide. If it works only while the Xbox is on, recheck active hours and successful wake-up at home. Then, if your device supports it, compare wake-up using official Remote Play from the same outside network, testing each client in turn. If wake-up works only through the official method, report the difference in results to the XBPlayer team; if both fail, investigate power and access from outside.

Before leaving, use the Remote Play away-from-home checklist. If wake-up remains unreliable, email hi@hetko.eu with your Xbox model, XBPlayer version, power mode, active hours in the console’s time zone, outside network, and the results of connecting while the Xbox is on and from Sleep. Clearly identify any comparison you could not perform.
