To play Xbox games on Android TV or Google TV through XBPlayer, install the app on a compatible TV or external Android TV box, connect a physical controller to that same device, and sign in to your Microsoft account. Then choose Remote Play from your Xbox or Xbox Cloud Gaming. The console or cloud service runs the game; the TV receives the stream.

Identify the device that will run XBPlayer

First find the device model and system in its settings or the manufacturer's documentation. Google TV is based on Android TV OS, but a Smart TV label alone does not confirm compatibility. Check XBPlayer's availability in the store for your specific device.

With an external box, the TV's built-in operating system does not determine whether XBPlayer can be installed: the app runs on the box. Switch the TV to its HDMI input. Record the box and TV models so that troubleshooting uses the right device's instructions.

Install XBPlayer through the app store

XBPlayer requires Android TV OS 10 or later. The Google TV interface version and screen size do not replace checking Android TV OS and app availability for the specific model. See the separate detailed requirements.

  1. On Android TV, find XBPlayer in Google Play. On Google TV, use search on the home screen: type or say “XBPlayer”. Apps are also available on the “Apps” tab.
  2. Check the name and developer: XBPlayer: Remote Play & Cloud by Hetko Apps & Games. It is an independent client, not a Microsoft app.
  3. If installation is offered for the selected device, choose “Install”, wait for completion and open XBPlayer.

If the app is missing or the store will not allow installation, check the model, system updates and Google account used on the device. A missing listing alone does not identify the cause. Send our team the model, system version and store message. A random APK does not establish hardware compatibility.

The free XBPlayer mode with its time balance is sufficient for the first test. Before starting, make sure you have enough time to begin a new session. Those minutes cover the client; games and cloud access are purchased or provided separately. See the free mode and paid version guide for details.

Connect the controller to the device running the app

Android TV play requires a compatible physical controller. Connect it to the TV if XBPlayer is installed there, or to the external Android TV box if that is where the app runs. A TV remote does not replace game sticks and triggers.

  1. For Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode. On Google TV, open “Settings” → “Remotes & Accessories” → “Pair remote or accessory”, select the controller and confirm pairing. On other Android TV variants, find the accessories section in the device instructions.
  2. For USB, use a connection method supported by both the controller and the TV or box. Make sure the cable carries data rather than only charging the controller.
  3. Confirm that the controller appears among connected devices, then test navigation and selecting actions in XBPlayer. Once streaming starts, separately test both sticks, the D-pad, triggers and main buttons.

If the controller will not connect, check its battery, pairing mode and any device it is already connected to. If it works in menus but particular game buttons are mapped incorrectly, check XBPlayer's button remapping. Change one mapping and immediately test it in the game.

Sign in to Microsoft and choose a console or the cloud

On the sign-in screen, choose “Use a Microsoft sign-in code”. Open the displayed address on a phone or computer, or scan the QR code; confirm your Microsoft account and return to XBPlayer. Check the gamertag in the account menu. The store's Google account and the Microsoft Xbox account serve different purposes.

  • Remote Play: you need your own Xbox One or Series X|S with remote features enabled and an installed game you can access. Leave the console on for the first test and connect the TV or box to the same home network. Select the Xbox under “Your consoles” and choose “Start Remote Play”; after connecting, open the game in the console interface. If the console is missing or will not connect, start with Xbox settings, power and network checks.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming: you do not need a console. Open “Cloud gaming”, find the title using “Search games” and launch a game available to the account. Most games require an eligible Game Pass subscription; buying a game alone does not guarantee cloud launch. If the launch you want is unavailable, check the terms and catalog on the Xbox Cloud Gaming website.

If you are unsure which option fits your library, use the Remote Play and cloud comparison.

Check picture, audio and responsiveness from the couch

Open a familiar quiet scene and sit where you normally play. Read subtitles and small prompts, inspect the picture edges, and check volume and audio synchronization with events. If the edges are cropped, check the TV's picture scaling and, for HDMI setups, the box's output settings in their documentation.

For an external box, check whether its HDMI input has a game mode. If so, compare the same section with it on and off. Do not assume it activates automatically: that depends on the TV and the connected device.

For XBPlayer installed on the TV, an HDMI input's game-mode setting does not apply to the current stream. Consult your model's documentation for image-processing settings available to built-in apps. A game mode for HDMI does not establish its availability inside XBPlayer.

If the picture freezes or audio breaks up, enable XBPlayer diagnostics and compare frame rate, bitrate, packet loss and decoding time. The last reading describes video processing, not the entire delay from input to picture. If possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet on the device running XBPlayer; for Remote Play, also check the Xbox's connection to the router. Change one setting and repeat the same part of the game.

Initial setup is complete when the game launches, all required buttons work, text is readable from your seat, and picture and audio let you play without constant disruption.
