How to connect a controller to Android TV for Xbox Remote Play

Connect the physical controller to the device running XBPlayer: the TV itself or an HDMI box. After pairing, check menus and in-game controls separately.

Xbox Remote Play through XBPlayer on Android TV needs a compatible physical controller. Connect it to the device running XBPlayer: the TV if the app is installed there, or the HDMI box if that is what you use. Then check controls inside the game: a working D-pad in TV menus does not confirm that sticks and triggers work in the stream.

First identify the device running XBPlayer

One TV may show its own interface, an external box and an Xbox on different HDMI inputs. Open XBPlayer and identify which device runs it. Connecting the controller to the TV does not replace pairing it with the box: an HDMI connection alone does not confirm that game commands pass between them.

XBPlayer runs on Android TV. Compatibility with other Smart TV systems and a particular controller model needs to be checked separately. Consult the TV or box and controller documentation for supported connection methods. If the controller has several modes, choose the manufacturer’s recommended Android mode. Keep the original remote nearby for setup.

Remote Play also needs a prepared Xbox with remote features enabled. App installation and console connection are covered in the XBPlayer on Android TV and Google TV guide.

Connect a Bluetooth controller through system settings

Charge the controller or check its batteries before starting. Make sure your exact model supports Bluetooth, then enable pairing mode using its instructions. There is no universal button combination for every controller.

Google’s official help gives these menu paths:

  • Android TV: “Settings” → “Remotes & accessories” → “Add accessory”.
  • Google TV: profile icon on the home screen → “Settings” → “Remotes & accessories” → “Pair remote or accessory”.

Open these settings on the device running XBPlayer. Manufacturers may use different names and locations; in that case, find Bluetooth accessory setup in your model’s instructions.

  1. Start searching for accessories and make sure the controller stays in pairing mode.
  2. Select it from the list. Confirm any connection request.
  3. Wait for the connection and check its status in the accessory list.
  4. Try moving the selection with the D-pad and confirming choices in the system menu.

If the controller previously worked with a phone or Xbox, check that it has not reconnected to the previous device. An entry among saved accessories does not mean the connection is active.

Use USB if your setup supports it

A wired connection requires controller support on the TV or box, a suitable USB port and a data cable. Connect the controller to the same device that runs XBPlayer. A USB connector does not guarantee game-controller support: check the port’s purpose in the model documentation.

If a direct connection is possible, skip the hub for the first test. If the controller is already paired over Bluetooth, temporarily disconnect that link, then check controls through the cable. Charging or an illuminated indicator alone does not confirm game-command transmission. Check buttons and sticks in the game; see the Bluetooth and USB comparison for the differences.

Check controls in the Xbox stream

Open XBPlayer, connect to your console through Remote Play and launch a familiar game. Use a quiet scene or training mode. There is no need to select a game from the cloud library for this test: that is a different launch method.

Check controls in turn:

  • D-pad and main buttons: do their assigned commands work?
  • Both sticks: do movement and looking work, and do they stop on release?
  • Bumpers, triggers and stick clicks: do the actions assigned to them in the game occur?
  • Simultaneous input: can you move and jump, or steer and accelerate?

If the game uses analog throttle or brake, compare a light and full trigger pull. If a button has no assignment in that scene, no response does not prove a fault. Menu operation, digital buttons and analog axes need separate assessment. Keep the original remote for system navigation.

If one button performs the wrong action, check in-game bindings and active XBPlayer remapping. If menus work but the game does not accept commands, return to the stream window, close open panels and test again. Save progress before reconnecting if possible. Then reconnect to the console with the controller already connected.

If input still does not work, continue with connection and live-input checks in XBPlayer. If a different command arrives or two actions occur, use the mapping and repetition guide. There is no need to repeat every pairing step when that stage has already succeeded.

If the connection drops or does not return after sleep

For unstable Bluetooth, compare operation closer to the receiving device. Try a more open location for a box hidden behind the TV or in a closed cabinet. Change one condition at a time so you can see what affected the result.

To test reconnection, save progress and end the stream first. Turn the controller off and on. Separately test connecting after the TV sleeps or the box restarts. Each time, confirm the system connection first, then start Remote Play and repeat a familiar game command.

On Google TV, you can reconnect a saved accessory from “Remotes & accessories”: select the controller and choose “Connect”. If that does not help, turn the controller off and on, then try again. For repeated problems, record the device models, connection method and stage where controls disappear, then go to controller disconnection troubleshooting.
