Troubleshooting
Xbox Remote Play keeps disconnecting: what to check
After a disconnection, try to return to the game and save. Then check the network, Xbox state and foreground/background behavior, and compare with the official client.

If Xbox Remote Play keeps disconnecting, first try reconnecting to the same console and saving your game. Then check what coincides with the failure: a network change, screen lock, XBPlayer closing or the Xbox turning off. A stream disconnection does not itself save progress or guarantee that the game has paused.
This guide covers streaming from your own Xbox when the stream has already started and then stops. If it never connects away from home, start with the remote access checks. Xbox Cloud Gaming disconnections and session conditions need to be investigated separately.
How to return to your game after a disconnection
- Remember or record the error message. Bring XBPlayer back on screen and check whether the phone’s internet connection has returned.
- If streaming does not resume, try connecting to the same Xbox under the same account. Do not restart the game and console as your first action: check whether you can return to the current game first.
- Once the picture and controls return, save using the game’s own system or wait for its autosave. Returning to the previous scene does not prove that progress has been saved.
- If you cannot connect and can access the console, check whether it is on, whether your home internet works and what the TV shows. If the Xbox has turned off, switch it on normally and try again.
Microsoft’s official Remote Play help describes reconnecting while the console remains on. It also recommends saving frequently: progress can be lost when the connection drops. Before further checks, choose a section with a recent save.
Distinguish a lost connection from a freeze or the app closing
| What happened | What to record |
|---|---|
| A disconnection or session-ended message appeared | The exact text, time and reconnection result. |
| The picture froze, but XBPlayer stayed open | Whether sound continues and the app interface responds. A frozen frame alone does not prove the connection has ended. |
| The phone returned to its home screen | Whether XBPlayer closed or can be brought back from recent apps. An app crash or the system stopping it are possible. |
In XBPlayer’s free mode, a zero time balance does not interrupt the current stream. You may need to add time before starting the next session. Distinguish the cause of a disconnection from an insufficient-time message during a new connection attempt.
Which condition to check after saving the game
First return to the current game on the same Xbox and save your progress. Choose a safe section for further tests. Change one condition per attempt.
The failure repeats after locking the screen or minimizing
Compare with a session where XBPlayer stays open and the screen stays on for the usual time before failure. If the difference repeats, check permission for background use for XBPlayer only; test Battery Saver separately. This does not guarantee streaming with the screen locked.
The network changes or packet loss rises before disconnection
Repeat the session in one place on one connection. If the Xbox uses Wi-Fi, compare Ethernet in a separate test. Record the time, packet loss and result; a coincidence does not identify the responsible router or device.
XBPlayer statistics: packet loss, jitter, FPS and decoding →XBPlayer closed completely
Record the last action, time and XBPlayer version. After returning to the game and saving, check for an app update and repeat the action once. If it closes again, send the details to the team. Browser Remote Play is an additional check of console availability, not proof that the app has no fault.
Reconnecting does not work
If you can access the console locally, check Xbox power, the home network and the TV picture. Then use the general connection troubleshooting guide. If you cannot check the console locally, state that limitation.
Xbox Remote Play not working: troubleshoot by symptom →A disconnection does not guarantee a pause or save. A returning picture does not confirm that progress was saved either. One short attempt without a failure does not confirm a fix; compare sessions of similar duration.
Check network stability during play
A one-off speed test does not show whether brief interruptions occurred immediately before the disconnection. Note switches between Wi-Fi and mobile data, movement around your home and changes of access point. For a comparison session, stay in one place and use one connection.
XBPlayer’s diagnostics include frame rate, bitrate, packet loss and decoding time. Record which readings change before the disconnection. Decoding time concerns video processing on the device, not the entire delay between a button press and the picture.
If the Xbox uses Wi-Fi, a separate attempt with Ethernet helps check its part of the network. Change one condition at a time, such as only the console’s connection. An increase in the cumulative loss counter before the failure is a reason to continue with packet-loss checks, but does not yet identify a particular router or device.
If the session disappears after locking the screen
Repeat the game with XBPlayer visible, the screen on and the app kept in the foreground. If the disconnection does not recur under those conditions, check background restrictions. Android may defer apps’ network activity after prolonged device inactivity; Battery Saver may also restrict background apps. This is a possible explanation, not a proven cause of a particular disconnection.
On Pixel, Google’s help gives this path: Settings → Apps → See all apps → XBPlayer → App battery usage → Allow background usage. Some of these steps apply to Android 14 and later. On other phones, find XBPlayer’s battery settings using the manufacturer’s instructions: names and options vary.
If background use is explicitly blocked, allow it for XBPlayer only and repeat the same sequence. Separately compare a session with Battery Saver temporarily off if it was enabled. Change one setting at a time and restore it if there is no result. Allowing background use does not guarantee that the client will keep streaming with the screen locked.
If you see an overheating warning, stop the test and let the device cool down according to its manufacturer’s advice. See the phone heat and battery usage guide for this situation.
Check the console and compare connection methods
Find out whether the Xbox turned off, home internet dropped or someone used the console when the failure occurred. Check Xbox service status. If the console is on but reconnection no longer works, return to Remote Play connection troubleshooting.
After saving the game, run a separate comparison session through official Xbox Remote Play in a browser. Use a supported device, browser and controller, the same Xbox and account, and the same network if possible. Connect one client at a time: simultaneous testing with two clients would distort the comparison.
If both disconnect, continue checking the shared conditions: the console, network and Xbox services. If a repeatable failure occurs only in XBPlayer, that is useful information for app support. The result alone does not establish the cause.
What to send support
Keep a short log of two or three comparable attempts. For each, include:
Enlarge screenshot - Date, time with time zone, and duration before disconnection.
- Phone and Xbox models, Android and XBPlayer versions, and game name.
- The phone’s network, console connection and the single condition you changed.
- Whether the app was visible, Battery Saver was enabled, or noticeable heating occurred.
- The error message, picture and sound behavior, reconnection result, and comparison with the official client.
One short attempt without a failure does not confirm a fix. Where possible, compare sessions long enough to cover the usual time before the problem appears. If the cause remains unclear or disconnections continue, send the results you have to hi@hetko.eu. A repeatable pattern is useful, but is not a requirement for contacting us.
