Troubleshooting
Xbox Remote Play works at home but not over mobile data
First connect over mobile data while the Xbox is already on, then try another external network. This helps separate a network failure from a wake-up problem.

If Xbox Remote Play works at home but not over mobile data, first try connecting while the console is already on. Then repeat the attempt on the same phone from another outside network and test Xbox wake-up separately. Before those comparisons, it is too early to blame CGNAT, open ports or buy a VPN.
This guide covers streaming from your Xbox One or Series X|S through XBPlayer. Successfully launching Xbox Cloud Gaming does not test whether your home console is reachable: cloud games run on Microsoft’s servers.
Prepare the Xbox and record the starting conditions
Run the initial checks while you can still reach the console. Successful play on your home network confirms that session worked, but does not yet test a connection from outside. If the Xbox was turned on with its button, remote wake-up also remains untested.
If you have already left, use only what you know about the Xbox’s state. Compare two outside networks and official Remote Play; mark power, the console’s picture and home internet as unverified. Checking those will require someone at the Xbox or a return home.
- On the Xbox, open Profile & system → Settings → Devices & connections → Remote features. Check Enable remote features.
- Make sure the console is online, the game launches and the TV shows no prompt requiring your action. Leave the Xbox on for the first attempt.
- Record the account, phone model, XBPlayer version and how the Xbox connects to the router. Use the same console, phone and account throughout the comparison.
Start with mobile data and the console on
End the home Remote Play session. On the phone, turn off Wi-Fi, turn on mobile data and open an ordinary website. If internet access does not work, first check the connection and available data allowance with your carrier. A website opening confirms basic internet access, but does not guarantee that streaming will work.
In XBPlayer, select your console and start Remote Play. Seeing the picture and checking control response is enough; a long game is unnecessary for this check. Record where the failure occurred: the console did not appear, the connection did not start, or the picture appeared and disappeared. Make sure the Xbox did not turn off during that time.
If the phone already uses a VPN or network filter, make one comparison attempt without it if possible, then restore the original setting. Change only that condition. A different result points to the route or filter having an effect, but does not by itself prove carrier blocking.
Repeat from an independent outside network
Connect the same phone to Wi-Fi outside the Xbox’s home network, such as at a friend’s home. It needs to be a different internet connection: a hotspot using the same SIM card does not provide that comparison. If the Wi-Fi requires signing in on a guest page, complete that first.
Before trying again, end the previous session and make sure the Xbox is still on. Keep the other conditions unchanged: account, app and console settings. Compare attempts as close together in time as possible.
| Result | Next check |
|---|---|
| Mobile data will not connect, but outside Wi-Fi works | Check the mobile connection, current plan and any filters in use. If a SIM from another carrier is available, try it. |
| Mobile data works, but outside Wi-Fi does not | Complete any guest-page sign-in and check that Wi-Fi network’s restrictions. For a hotel, use the guest network guide. Mobile data can be a temporary option, taking your plan and data usage into account. |
| Neither outside network connects | Check the Xbox’s state and compare with official Remote Play. The home network, client and account remain possible causes. |
| The Xbox is reachable while on, but not asleep | Move on to checking power mode and the active hours schedule. |
| The picture appears, then the session disconnects | Check connection stability using the Remote Play disconnection guide. |
These results narrow the search. Mobile data failing while Wi-Fi works does not yet establish a specific cause: signal conditions, phone settings and the connection route can all affect it.
Test Xbox wake-up separately
If connecting to the powered-on console worked, end the session and put the Xbox to sleep. Remote wake-up requires Sleep in power settings. Check active hours too: outside the set period, the console may shut down fully.
Connect again through the outside network that just worked. If the Xbox becomes reachable again after manual power-on, start with power and wake-up checks. With Shutdown selected, remote features can work while the console is on; that does not mean it can be woken after it turns off.
Compare XBPlayer with official Remote Play
If the cause is still unclear, end the XBPlayer session and open xbox.com/remoteplay on a supported device in a supported browser. Sign in to the same account and select the same console. Use a compatible controller to test controls. Keep the network and Xbox power state unchanged.
If the official option works but XBPlayer does not connect under the same conditions, report that difference to XBPlayer support. This is a useful comparison, but not yet proof of an app bug: connection establishment may differ. If neither works, continue checking the shared conditions—the console, account and networks.
Investigate NAT after comparing connections
Record your home network setup: the provider’s equipment, your own router and the Xbox connection. Ask your provider whether it uses CGNAT—a shared external IPv4 address for several customers. The presence of CGNAT or double NAT does not replace troubleshooting.
If a direct connection is unavailable, XBPlayer can relay the encrypted stream through servers in the EU. The result also depends on the particular network’s restrictions; CGNAT alone does not mean Remote Play is unavailable.
Do not open a random set of ports, put your Xbox in a DMZ or install a VPN as a universal fix. Router changes should address a confirmed network setup and specific problem. Details and questions for your provider are collected in the NAT and CGNAT guide.
Send support results that can be reproduced
Ask your mobile carrier about plan or network restrictions if the problem repeats only over mobile data. Describe your router setup and the results of two outside-network attempts to your home internet provider. Present suspected filtering as a suspicion.
Enlarge screenshot XBPlayer support needs the error time with its time zone, the exact message, app and system versions, Xbox power state and comparison results. Say whether official Remote Play behaves differently. After a fix, repeat the test before your trip using the phone, mobile network and power state you will use away from home.
Send the observations you have to hi@hetko.eu. You do not need to guess the state of a console or home network you cannot currently access.
